Used Boats MooloolabaUsed Boats For Sale in Mooloolaba
Dolphin Marine has sold used boats to Mooloolaba buyers for more than 25 years, with hulls assessed against the Mooloolah River bar’s current, well-documented conditions.
Mooloolaba is a working launch point for offshore fishing, and the bar at the river mouth is a genuine, actively monitored hazard: Maritime Safety Queensland has issued repeated shoaling notices here through 2025, and an independent government review into the crossing was announced after a fatal incident. That context changes what matters in a used boat: freeboard, deadrise, deck drainage and reliable power count for more than cabin layout. Our technicians assess every pre-owned boat against exactly those factors before we recommend it for a Mooloolaba-based owner. Visit our Buderim yard, a short drive from Parkyn Parade.
Buying a used boat for Mooloolaba’s bar and berths
Mooloolaba buyers are usually weighing up offshore fishing capability against practical ownership costs, and the Mooloolah River bar is the deciding factor either way. Dolphin Marine has serviced boats launching from Mooloolaba for more than 25 years, long enough to see how shifting sand and swell at the bar change which hulls are genuinely suited to it. We assess every used boat’s freeboard, deadrise and engine reliability with that crossing specifically in mind, and we’ll tell you if a boat on our floor is better suited to sheltered water. Storage also matters here: whether you keep the boat on a trailer, in a marina berth, or dry-stacked shapes ongoing maintenance as much as the hull does.

Local context
Mooloolaba grew up at the mouth of the Mooloolah River, used as a timber depot from the 1860s before subdivision began in earnest in the 1920s. Today it’s one of the busiest offshore launch points on the coast, and the bar at the entrance has recently drawn significant official attention: MSQ surveys through 2025 recorded shoal patches with least depths of around 0.5 to 1.0 metres at points across the channel.
Common challenges
Following a fatal crossing, the Queensland Government announced an independent review into long and short-term solutions for the bar in September 2025, and mariners continue to receive regular shoaling warnings. For boat owners, that means the right hull and gear genuinely matter, not just caution.
Why it matters
A boat without enough freeboard, deadrise or reliable power is a real risk at a bar this actively monitored. Separately, storage choice (berth, dry-stack or trailer) drives ongoing maintenance costs, since water-kept boats need regular antifoul and anode attention that trailer-stored boats don’t.
Our approach
We assess freeboard, deadrise, deck drainage and engine reliability against the bar’s documented conditions before recommending any boat for offshore use, and we check current MSQ notices as part of that advice. We also talk through berth, dry-stack and trailer storage trade-offs so the ongoing cost of ownership is clear from day one.

Common Problems & Solutions for Mooloolaba Boat Owners
These are the issues Mooloolaba-based buyers and owners raise most often.
“I'm not confident the boat I'm looking at can handle the bar”
Cause Shoaling at the Mooloolah River bar has worsened in places, and not every used boat marketed for coastal use is genuinely suited to current conditions.
Matters This is an actively monitored hazard, with an independent government review underway after a fatal crossing in 2025.
Solution We assess freeboard, deadrise and power against the bar specifically and will tell you if a hull is better suited to sheltered water.
“My water-kept boat is growing marine growth fast”
Cause Boats kept on a marina berth sit in the water continuously, which accelerates antifoul breakdown and hull fouling compared with trailer storage.
Matters Fouling increases fuel use and can damage antifoul coatings if left unaddressed.
Solution We advise on antifoul schedules suited to berth-kept boats and can arrange haul-out and recoating work.
“I don't know whether to berth, dry-stack or trailer my boat”
Cause Each storage option has different costs and maintenance needs, and brochures rarely compare them honestly.
Matters Choosing the wrong storage type for how often you actually use the boat wastes money either way.
Solution We talk through berth, dry-stack and trailer options against your planned usage before you commit to a boat.
“How do I check if a bar crossing is safe today?”
Cause Bar conditions change with tide, swell and recent shoaling, and yesterday’s safe crossing isn’t a guarantee for today.
Matters Crossing in the wrong conditions is the leading cause of bar-related incidents.
Solution Check the latest Maritime Safety Queensland Notices to Mariners before every crossing, and plan around tide and swell rather than a fixed routine.

FAQs
Is the Mooloolah River bar dangerous right now?
It’s an actively monitored hazard with recent shoaling notices and an independent government review underway following a fatal crossing in 2025. Always check the latest Maritime Safety Queensland notices and plan around tide and swell.
Where do Mooloolaba owners launch?
The Parkyn Parade ramp is the main local launch point for offshore trips. We’re a short drive away at Kelly Court, Buderim.
What should I look for in an offshore-capable used boat?
Freeboard, deadrise, deck drainage and reliable power matter more than cabin layout. Roughly 5.5 metres and up is common for comfortable offshore use, but we assess each hull individually against the bar’s current conditions.
I live in an apartment with no trailer storage. What are my options?
Marina berths and dry-stack facilities are both used by Mooloolaba owners without home storage. Berthed boats need more frequent antifoul and anode attention, which we can factor into your running costs.
Do you service boats after I buy one?
Yes, our full workshop at Kelly Court covers outboard and diesel servicing, fibreglass repairs, trailer work and fit-outs for anything we sell.
How do I compare used boats for Mooloolaba?
Start with bar-crossing suitability, then engine hours, service history, hull condition and storage plan. We document all of this on every boat we sell.
Dolphin Marine in Mooloolaba
Mooloolaba began as a timber depot at the Mooloolah River mouth from the 1860s, serving Brisbane sawmiller William Pettigrew’s operations before he relocated to Maroochydore in 1891. Development stalled for nearly two decades afterwards, with fishing and fruit growing as the main local industries, until the area was formally subdivided and its first land sale took place on 1 January 1921. The name Mooloolaba was adopted to distinguish the beach town from the inland railway town of Mooloolah. Today it’s a major offshore launch point, and the bar at its entrance remains an actively managed waterway. Dolphin Marine has no Mooloolaba shopfront; we serve the area from our Buderim workshop.
