Kuluin is about as close as you can live to our yard without sharing a fence. We are on Kelly Court, just across Maroochydore Road on the Kunda Park side, so if you are looking at used boats in Kuluin you can be standing next to the boat with the engine running inside ten minutes of leaving home. Kuluin is small and hemmed in. Maroochydore Road runs along one side, the Sunshine Motorway along another, and the Kunda Park industrial estate sits immediately to the west, reaching out toward Eudlo Creek. What is left is a compact residential pocket — and an unusually detached one. The 2021 Census counted 2,700 residents across 1,002 private dwellings, and 89.0% of occupied dwellings here are separate houses, against just 1.5% flats or apartments, at a median age of 41.
That is the highest share of separate houses of any suburb in this service area, which is exactly why boat ownership works here. Almost everyone has somewhere to put a boat. The question is whether it fits.
The suburb filled in later than people assume. Kuluin was only recognised as a separate locality in 1991, having previously been split between Maroochydore and Buderim; most of the streets around the primary school were established by the mid-1980s, with the land west of Main Road developed after that. The school itself opened in 1987, with the shopping centre following on Tallow Wood Drive. The suburb's name is believed to come from an Aboriginal word for black swan — the same bird behind the name of the Maroochy River, a few minutes north.
What that history means in practice is a housing stock built to mid-1980s and 1990s lot patterns rather than to the wide side setbacks a modern trailer boat assumes. Dolphin Marine Sunshine Coast Pty Ltd operates from 3/11 Kelly Court, Buderim QLD 4556, roughly five minutes from Kuluin via Maroochydore Road, with room on site to park a tow vehicle and trailer. The business states on its own site that it has served Sunshine Coast boaters for more than 25 years. Service and sales staff are described as factory trained and certified, with Yamaha and Volvo Penta certified technicians, and the workshop services most major brands including Yamaha, Mercury, Suzuki, Honda, Evinrude, Johnson and Tohatsu. For offshore trips you would tow a little further to Parkyn Parade at Mooloolaba, which has deeper access and more parking — and if you are crossing a coastal bar in an open boat under 4.8m, everyone aboard must be wearing a lifejacket, not just carrying one.
Can you service the boat after I buy it?
